Head of EULEX visits DFM

26 July 2013

Head of the EULEX Mission, Bernd Borchardt, visited the Department of Forensic Medicine (DFM) in Pristina. During the visit, Borchardt met Alan Robinson (EULEX DFM Co-Head) and Arsim Gerxhaliu, (DFM Director).

Robinson and Gerxhaliu briefed the EULEX Head of Mission on sensitive issues regarding Missing Persons and Forensic Medicine. The challenges related to determining the fate of missing persons were discussed, together with the importance of building local forensic capacity to address these challenges once EULEX finishes its mandate at the DFM.

Borchardt emphasized the importance of jointly developing a roadmap which should guide the eventual transfer of all duties from EULEX to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), both in the forensic medicine and the Missing Persons' field.

Since EULEX began working with the MoJ, the DFM has conducted over 400 field operations all over Kosovo and handed back to families the remains of 340 victims of the conflict.
