Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, arrived in Kosovo on 27 May on a one-day visit. The Head of EULEX, Xavier de Marhnac, greeted Ms. Ashton at the EULEX Headquarters in Pristina, where she praised EULEX for its work in the rule of law area in Kosovo. Ms Ashton also visited the town of Prizren and met Prime Minister Hashim Thaci.

Full statement made by Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on her visit to the EU Rule of Law Mission (EULEX Kosovo) in Pristina on 27 May, 2011.

“I just wanted to say on this beautiful morning, what a pleasure it is to be back in Pristina and with the Head of Mission Mr Bout de Marnhac to be able to be here at EULEX headquarters. The twenty-seven Member States of the European Union fully support the Mission and the work that it’s trying to do. Dealing with rule of law issues is really important. It’s critical to the future of Kosovo. It’s critical for the future of the people and it’s essential for the ambitions that you have for your work and your development with the European Union. So I wanted to be here and to be saying to all of you that it’s extremely important that we all support the mission, as we do in the European Union, and that we recognise the importance of the work that is going on, but also, as I’ve said, to have the opportunity, to say what a great pleasure it is to be here in Pristina and to have the opportunity to discuss with the Prime Minister and other Ministers the importance of the future for Kosovo. So, thank you very much and I’m looking forward to an enjoyable day.”
