Senior EU Representative in Kosovo

26 May 2010

The Civilian Operations Commander of the European Union, Mr. Kees Klompenhouwer, is visiting Kosovo this week. Mr. Klompenhouwer is responsible for all civilian EU missions worldwide. Except from meeting with EULEX Head of Mission and EULEX members he held meetings with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Lamberto Zannier, the Head of EU Liaison Office, Renzo Daviddi as well as several Ambassadors. He also met the Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci and some of the ministers of the Government.

Today, Mr. Klompenhouwer paid a visit to Gate 1 and the EU House, the Mitrovica District Court and the EU Info Point in Mitrovice/a north. He was particularly interested to see the EU activities in North Mitrovice/a, and meet EULEX staff working in this part of Kosovo.

“I came here to get first hand information from EU mission members on their work and the progress they have achieved in the north, and to assure the people of all communities in this area that the EU will continue to be dedicated to their future. Our objective is to promote stability, security and prosperity - hence European values - for the benefit of all people in Kosovo” said Mr. Klompenhouwer.

The EULEX Head of Mission added that EULEX has enhanced its presence in the north of Kosovo: “Apart from being permanently present at Gate 1 and 31, we have Police Officers working in all Kosovo Police Stations in the north and our Judges and Prosecutors in the District Court. We now also encourage our staff to take up residence in the north and share the life of the communities they work with”, Yves de Kermabon said.
