Press Release

Detention on remand extended for Naser Kelmendi

7 October 2013

A EULEX pre-trial judge at the Basic Court in Pristina granted the request of a EULEX prosecutor from Kosovo Special Prosecution Office (SPRK) to extend detention on remand for Naser Kelmendi until 7 January 2014.

Kelmendi was arrested in May 2013 based on an order issued by a EULEX prosecutor from SPRK, who initiated an investigation into the case. The defendant is being investigated for organised crime, murder and drug trafficking. These are the same offences he has been investigated for by the state authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The prosecution and the defendant have the right to appeal this decision.

The judge considered that the danger of flight remains high due to the defendant's links with Serbia and the circumstances of the charges against him. The judge therefor concluded that the danger of flight remains at a level which warrants a measure.

The prosecution and defendants have the right to appeal this decision.
