Detention ordered for six defendants in war crimes case

12 December 2012

A EULEX judge at Pristina District Court yesterday ordered one month’s detention on remand for four individuals accused in the so-called Kleçkë/Klečka war crimes case. Detention on remand was imposed for a period of one month against the defendants Behlul Limaj, Refki Mazreku, Sabit Shala and Besim Shurdhaj.

House Detention together with prohibition on contacting or visiting persons with whom they do not reside and confiscation of travel documents was imposed for a period of one month against the defendants Shaban Shala and Arben Krasniqi.

A mixed panel of three EULEX judges and two local judges, presided over by a EULEX judge at the Supreme Court, had earlier in the day ordered a retrial against these six defendants in the second part of the so-called Kleçkë/Klečka case.

In accordance with Articles 287(2), 283(3) and (4) of the Kosovo Code of Criminal Procedure, each accused may file an appeal against this ruling within 24 hours of being served with the ruling.

The case is being prosecuted by a EULEX special prosecutor from the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office (SPRK).
