Press briefing with the Mayor of Gjilan/Gnjilane Qemajl Mustafa

The Head of Mission Yves de Kermabon has visited Gjilan/Gnjilane as part of the continuing outreach activities throughout Kosovo.

Difficulties in the implementation of rule of law were identified at the meeting with the local authorities; however, Kermabon stressed the main principle of the mission – the local ownership.

“EULEX is not here for its own success but rather for the success of Kosovo. We assist you but we don’t do your job instead of you”, said de Kermabon.

In the meeting with the Gjilan/Gnjilane mayor Qemajl Mustafa, de Kermabon was briefed about the situation in the region, which, according to Mustafa “is truly multiethnic”.

“Despite the economic difficulties, the situation in our region is calm and secure. We didn’t have any interethnic incidents until now”, said Qemajl Mustafa, the Mayer of Gjilan/Gnjilane. “Furthermore, the local Serbs are participating in the local government”, added Mustafa.

The work of the EULEX was praised by Elmina Mahmuti, the Kosovo Police Region Commander for Gjilan/Gnjilane, who said to de Kermabon that between the two institutions there is an excellent cooperation.

“We have returned the trust and the confidence of the people in police” said Mahmuti adding that Kosovo Police in her region is represented by all communities living there. “You are here to assist us, but the main responsibility remains with us”, said Mahmuti to de Kermabon.

During his visit to Gjilan/Gnjilane municipality, de Kermabon met with the EULEX staff members serving in the region, visited the local market and the Orthodox Church downtown in Gjilan/Gnjilane.
